Rabbit Pest Control

The European Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is an introduced species to the UK, with records showing populations on the UK mainland as far back as the 12th century.

They unfortunately can cause extensive damage to the land they live on. Not only through their chewing and grazing, but also their continued digging as they construct new warrens.

Landowners are legally obliged to control rabbits on their land, under the Pest Act 1954. This legislation names the whole of England and Wales are named as a “Rabbit Clearance Area”

How to get rid of Rabbits

Full removal of rabbits from an area can be challenging, and multiple methods are often needed. Quite often it can be a case of managing the numbers, rather then achieving complete removal.

Method of removal an include;

  • Shooting, typically at night with night vision equipment and low volume rifles
  • Trapping, including cage and spring traps
  • Rabbit proof fencing, to keep new rabbits from entering an area
  • Gassing
  • Ferreting, using carried out by hobbyist ferret keepers

Not all methods are suitable for every application. A pest control expert will advise which methods are most likely to be effective. Most methods are labour intensive, requiring multiple visits to be successful. There are no instant fixes to a rabbit problem.

Damage caused by Rabbits

Rabbits cause millions of pounds worth of damage each year, particularly for landowners. This damage includes;

  • Killing of young trees, shrubs and plants, due to their continually grazing and chewing.
  • Damage to grazing land, with their burrows creating hazards for hoofed livestock.
  • Solar and wind farms.
  • Golf course and other sporting grounds.
  • Gardens and Orchards

Rabbits famously breed at a rapid rate, reaching sexual maturity in a matter of months. They can produce anywhere from 5 – 14 kits every 28-32 days, becoming pregnant again within hours. Rabbits typically have 3-5 litters per year, usually between January to July.
